A couple of animated character scripts that I use draw the lower stroke in the 氵radical (water ,
#85) as a straight line, but everywhere I see it, it has a bend in the middle, as shown here: .

Can the lower stroke be simply straight or does it need the bend?

Thanks in advance.

The longest stoke doesn't have to bend, but normally it's slightly slanting (15 or 20º East) and
not completely vertical North.

As far as I know, it is not a bend. In calligraphy people add strength (用力) when they start
the last stroke of the water radical from the lower left thus the ink would form a dot. The print
font simply tries to reflect this. In handwriter say with a ball pen or a pencil even if we add
strength (we do) there would not be a dot so it is simply a straight stroke slanting from the
lower left to the upper right.

I was told that this radical is only for print though, and if you're to write by hand you
basically put two downward lines at the top, and one upward facing line at the bottom.
