Paris Hilton ordered to return to court

LOS ANGELES - Hours after Paris Hilton was sent home under house arrest
Thursday, the judge who put her in jail ordered her into court to
determine whether she should be put back behind bars. Hilton must report
to court at 9 a.m. Friday, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told
The Associated Press.

"My understanding is she will be brought in in a sheriff's vehicle from
her home," Parachini said.

Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer issued his order after the city
attorney filed a petition late Thursday afternoon questioning if Sheriff
Lee Baca should be held in contempt of court for releasing Hilton
Thursday morning.

The celebrity inmate was sent home from the L.A. County jail's Lynwood
lockup shortly after 2 a.m. for an unspecified medical condition in a
stunning reduction to her original 45-day sentence.

She was ordered to finish her 45-day sentence under house arrest, meaning
she could not leave her four-bedroom, three-bath home in the Hollywood
Hills until next month.

Study Chinese - Apple iPhone to launch

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Apple iPhone to launch

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-06-05 09:57

Apple's new iPhone, a "smart" mobile phone offering music storage and
Internet access, will be launched on June 29, according to television ads
by the high-tech group.

The iPhone, which combines the wildly popular iPod music player with
features found in other smart phones, was unveiled in January by Apple
chief executive Steve Jobs.

Jobs also promised that iPhones would be available in June. Apple delayed
the release of its new Leopard operating system for Macintosh computers
so engineers could devote their efforts to the iPhone.

A supposed internal Apple memo leaked last month indicated concerns that
iPhones might not make it to market on time.

"There have been a lot of rumors of significant problems with the
product," said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.

"What Apple is trying to do is put those rumors to rest and take pressure
off stock prices."

The device, to sell at prices of 499 to 599 dollars, will be distributed
in the US market through ATT, the new name for the Cingular Wireless
brand.

It will weigh 135 grams (3.8 ounces) and have the Apple OS X operating
system and four or eight megabytes of storage. It will be able to play
videos as well as music and have a screen of 3.5 inches (nine
centimeters).

Analysts are divided on whether the iPhone will be an industry-changing
device or be too expensive to compete with other smart phones such as the
BlackBerry.

On its website, Apple said the iPhone will include "a revolutionary
mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough
Internet communications device." It will also include a two-megapixel
digital camera.

A second-generation iPhone is "already being rushed out," Enderle said.

Taiwan-based manufacturer Quanta Computer is reported to have a contract
to build millions of next-generation iPhones that are to begin shipping
before the end of the year.

"The iPhone has a number of shortcomings and now that it is in the final
phase of testing Apple can pinpoint what those are and fix them in the
second-generation," Enderle said.

"As a gen-one product, no one in the industry thought Apple was going to
hit one out of the park. Especially with this being their first phone."

Among the flaws in iPhones are built-in batteries likely to run out of
useful life in approximately a year based on common recharging patterns,
according to Enderle.

ATT has already received more than a million inquiries about iPhones.

Working with ATT lets Apple tailor iPhones to the GSM mobile network that
is common outside the United States. The iPhone is to debut in Europe by
the end of this year and in Asia in 2008.

Britney Spears pens personal Web message

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-30 08:39

Britney Spears

Britney Spears says she "hit rock bottom," in a message posted on her Web
site about the end of her marriage and her time in rehab.

"Recently, I was sent to a very humbling place called rehab. I truly hit
rock bottom. Till this day I don't think that it was alcohol or
depression," the 25-year-old pop star writes. "I was like a bad kid
running around with ADD (attention deficit disorder)."

Spears completed a monthlong stay at a luxury Malibu rehabilitation
treatment facility in March after a series of run-ins with the paparazzi
that included a stop at a San Fernando Valley hair salon, where she was
caught on video shearing her own locks. Other photos splashed across the
Internet appeared to reveal Spears out partying wearing nothing
underneath her short skirts.

She was seen going out with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan after filing
for divorce from aspiring rapper Kevin Federline last November, just two
months after giving birth to their second child, Jayden James. The pair
also have an older son, Sean Preston, now 20 months.

The couple reached a divorce settlement in March.

"I had a manager from a long time ago come in and try to direct me and my
life after I got my divorce," writes Spears. "I was so overwhelmed I
think that I was in a little shock too. I didn't know who to go to."

"I realized how much energy and love I had put into my past relationship
when it was gone because I genuinely did not know what to do with myself,
and it made me so sad. I confess, I was so lost," she writes.

"I think the whole problem was letting too many people into my life," she
continues. "You never know another person's intentions or what another
person wants. ... I have had to cut so many people out of my life."

Beat the heat at the beach

(qianlong.com)
Updated: 2007-05-28 09:06

As the weather becomes hotter, people seek refuge from the heat to hang
out near cool waters. Going to the beach would be a good choice as it is
comfortable to stand on the soft sand and enjoy the sea breeze. But
living in big cities, it is difficult to find beautiful sand beaches
nearby. Now Citylife will help you locate some wonderful areas you can
escape to.

Shanghai

Jinshan City Beach

Boasting good beach volleyball stadium, the sand here is very soft and
the annual Jinshan Beach Volleyball March is now on. Visitors can not
only enjoy the beautiful and comfortable environment but also a brilliant
game of spikes and volleys.

It's also a great opportunity to fly a kite on the beach. The sea breeze
will make both your kite and your heart fly high.

Tips:

1) The beach becomes very busy at dusk. If you want to meet more friends,
come at this time.

2) There is a long corridor on the beach where people can rest in a shady
and cool environment.

3) How to get there: From Shenzhuang to Shenfengjin Expressway. Then take
the "Tingweigong" exit and turn left. Take the Jinshan Avenue and then go
to Weiling Road.

Songjiangyueyuanyuan Summer Bank

Songjiangyueyuanyuan Bank is a park full of sculptures. But in the
summer, what is more attractive is the sand beach at the Summer Bank.
Here, people can play in the sand and water and the hot weather instantly
turns to be cool!

Tips:

1) It is a good place to go with children, as there are many fun things
for them to try, like the "Bouncing bed" and "Children's paddling pool".

2) How to get there: Take Yan'an Elevated Road to get to A9 Expressway.
Then get off at Sheshan Exit toJiasong Middle Road, to get to Linyin
Avenue and then you will reach -Yueyuanyuan.

Learning Chinese - "Harry Potter" film to premiere in Tokyo

"Harry Potter" film to premiere in Tokyo

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-05-22 17:14

The fifth "Harry Potter" film, based on the best-selling books about the
young boy wizard, will premiere in Japan on June 28, just months after
"Spider-Man 3" marked a rare international movie debut in Tokyo.

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman in Tokyo said British actor Daniel Radcliffe,
who plays the broomstick-flying Harry, would come to Tokyo for the event,
which is scheduled ahead of the movie's London showing on July 3.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is the latest installment in
a series that began in 2001 with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

The four previous "Harry Potter" movies, based on J.K. Rowling's books,
have grossed more than $3.5 billion worldwide.

There is "no special reason" why the film is making its premiere in
Japan, the spokeswoman said.

But the Tokyo premiere last month of another highly anticipated sequel,
"Spider-Man 3," was seen as a shrewd push into the faster-growing
international market that could help boost box-office revenues.

The seventh and final book in the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows," will go on sale on July 21, but it is not clear
when the film version will be made.

Drew draws Angelina duty

(E!Online)

The esteemed Barrymore lineage can now count an ambassador among its
ranks.

Drew Barrymore has been tapped to be an Ambassador against Hunger for the
United Nation's World Food Program, the organization announced Wednesday.

"I am honored and humbled to accept this challenging and rewarding
assignment," said the 32-year-old actress, who will focus on improving
school feeding programs. "I can't think of any issue that is more
important than working to see that no schoolchild in this world goes
hungry."

Fresh from gracing the cover of People magazine's recent 100 Most
Beautiful People issue, Barrymore spoke from Washington, D.C., where she
was on Capitol Hill to help lobby Congress about passing draft
legislation that would expand the McGovern-Dole International Food for
Education and Child Nutrition Program, which regulates funding for school
meals.

"Feeding a child at school is such a simple thingbut it works
miracles," the Charlie's Angels star said. "School feeding not only fills
stomachs, but has a proven track record of boosting enrollment,
attendance and academic performance. For just pennies a day per child,
this program changes livesand ultimately can impact the futures of poor
countries around the world in a profound way."

The actress, who's currently on the big screen with Eric Bana in Lucky
You and just hit DVD yesterday with Hugh Grant in Music and Lyrics,
recently returned from her second trip to Kenya, where she joined her
fellow Ambassador against Hunger, marathon world record-holder Paul
Tergat, to visit sites where U.N.'s World Food Project is in effect.

We are delighted to have Drew Barrymore join our team," WFP executive
director Josette Sheeran said. "Her passion and commitment to changing
the world for the betterand of course the respect and admiration she
commandswill make her a wonderful champion for school feeding."

Barrymore joins a growing list of A-listers that includes Angelina Jolie
(an ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees), Michael
Douglas (a U.N. messenger of peace for non-proliferation), Brad Pitt,
George Clooney, Madonna, Don Cheadle, Leonardo DiCaprio and many others
who have in recent years added "improve global living conditions" to
their to-do lists.

Chinese Pinyin - Commuting by subway is far from convenient

Commuting by subway is far from convenient

By Zhang Xi (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-04-25 17:26

Passengers wait on the platform as a subway train approaches at a Beijing
subway station in this March 5, 2007 photo. [newsphoto]
Beijing resident Ms. Zhang travels on the Batong subway line everyday
between home and work to avoid the traffic jam above ground. However, she
has to face another problem during her daily trip -- how to get on the
crowded train.

"Sometimes I have to wait for the next train to get on, but it's the same
situation," she sighed. "Many people are waiting on the platform, and
people in the train have trouble getting out. To avoid being late, I have
to push others to get into the coach. Even after I successfully get on
the train, I am squeezed next to others and I can't touch any handrails.
What's worse is that the air is smelly due to so many people on the
train. Although I'm only on the train for a short time, I feel frustrated
and exhausted every time," Ms. Zhang said resignedly.

She is not the only Beijing local who experiences a tough time commuting
every weekday. With the development of the subway system, more and more
Beijingers choose to travel by subway rather than bus or taxi to escape
the traffic jam.

For example Batong line is connected to subway Line 1, the longest
east-west subway line in Beijing. And many people choose to live near the
Batong line because it's in the outskirts of the city where people can
commute into the city. But it's an uphill battle to get to and from work
everyday.

Crowed coaches and terrible air quality cause quarrels, even fights on
the train. "I witnessed an argument between a young woman and a man; she
claimed she was almost suffocating due to the pushing and poor air
quality," Ms. Zhang explained. "But you cannot blame the man. It was not
his fault. There were too many passengers."

According to a survey by Beijing based newspaper Star Daily, on weekday
morning, some coaches may hold over 300 and up to 400 people and this is
nearly the same amount of passengers waiting on the platform at the next
station. At the interchange station, passengers push their way up the
stairs to transfer to Line 1. It takes them 5 minutes just to leave the
junction station.

To solve the problem of overcrowding, the Beijing metro Corp plans to
shorten the intervals between departures during rush hour from 5 minutes
to 4 minutes by the end of this year. Though many passengers have
suggested adding more coaches to the trains, the Beijing metro Corp said
this is not possible due to technical reasons.

HSK - 'Disturbia' provides genuine chills

ENTERTAINMENT / Review

'Disturbia' provides genuine chills

By Roger Moore (Orlando Sentinel)
Updated: 2007-04-16 10:35

Disturbia is a savagely efficient eyewitness-to-murder thriller, a Rear
Window for the YouTube generation.

It's an occasionally comic high school romance wrapped in grief and
violence. Those shifts in tone may give you whiplash, but the third act's
by-the-book payoff does what it's designed to do -- pay off.

This film from the writer of Red Eye and the director of Two for the
Money takes Alfred Hitchcock's great Rear Window conceit, that we're all
voyeurs when we go to the movies, and ratchets it up for a more
plugged-in age. What is privacy to kids who reveal their deepest secrets,
or dishonest versions of them, to MySpace, kids growing up in a world of
security cameras and Internet security breaches?

Photo Gallery: Disturbia
A father-son fishing trip ends in tragedy, and Kale (Shia LaBeouf) has to
carry around grief and guilt for the rest of his life, or at least for
the rest of high school. Cut to a year later, and he manages to punch a
teacher out in the last days of a semester. He earns house arrest -- an
electronic ankle bracelet -- for the summer.

Kale goes through a sugar-buzz/video game/isolation-induced stir
craziness. Then, hot hot Ashley (Sarah Roemer of The Grudge 2) moves in
next door, and Kale watches her. A lot. Is she teasing him? She seems to
be watching him, too.

Wouldn't you know it, that's when the a missing person makes the news.
Kale sees coincidences from the case that connect to a mysterious
neighbor. He lets himself be distracted from Job One -- pursuing Ashley.
Kale, his pal Ronnie (Aaron Yoo, a scene-stealer) and eventually Ashley
work themselves into a tizzy over the guy who may be a serial killer,
living right next door.

Smart casting move: David Morse is the mysterious Turner. He can be
spooky and dangerous, or sad and misunderstood.

A blunder: The script doesn't let him play those shades. We believe the
kids, that he's one bad hombre, from the get-go.

The movie plays around with the electronic bracelet idea, foreshadowing
how Kale might make an asset out of his "spatially limited" existence.
Routine ticking clock scenes put the kids in jeopardy. Cell phones and
all manner of surveillance and home video gear give Disturbia a Blair
Witch Project feel. Experiencing violence -- or a taste of it -- through
a camcorder boosts the fear factor.

LaBeouf, of The Greatest Game Ever Played and Holes, captures the
caffeine-jag awkwardness of his character's age and makes for a
believably paranoid gearhead. His reasons for questioning Turner betray a
teenager's understanding of privacy.

"Why does he want his privacy? What's he hiding?"

Where the movie stumbles is in its lack of a poker face. We know director
D.J. Caruso's hand before he plays it -- too many "tells," too many
obvious bits of foreshadowing.

But the chills are genuine. And there's something very rewarding about
sitting through a new version of a movie any film buff knows by heart.
The years may change the technology of how we spy on our neighbors, but
not our desire to do it.

NEW YORK - Justin Timberlake blames celebrity magazines for turning his
personal life into juicy gossip fodder. "I despise what they do," the
26-year-old singer tells Details magazine in an interview in its April
issue. "They create soap operas out of people's lives. ... It's a spin
game, and I choose not to take part in it."

That includes not dishing any dirt about former girlfriends Britney
Spears and Cameron Diaz.

"I would never say anything bad about anyone. I love a lot of those
people," says Timberlake, whose latest album is "FutureSex/LoveSounds."

Diaz and Timberlake, who had dated since 2003, confirmed their split in
January. Timberlake's relationship with Spears ended in 2002. They were a
high-profile couple for three years.

Timberlake, a former member of boy band 'N Sync, released his debut solo
album, "Justified," in 2002. The album won a Grammy Award.

"I tried so hard to be an R&B artist and it was the pop album of the
year. ... That's the last thing I wanted," Timberlake says. "But I was
like, `So everyone considers me a pop artist? ... I'm going to do
whatever I want to do.'"

Timberlake took home a trophy as favorite male singer Saturday night in
the raucous, slime-drenched 20th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards
on Viacom International Inc.'s Nickelodeon channel.

The show began with Timberlake descending from the ceiling on a large
orange Nickelodeon blimp and breaking into a Broadway show tune in which
he taunted the audience, saying he was too famous to be slimed.

"You'll never get a drop of slime on old J.T.," he sang.

By the end of the song, of course, he had been drenched in the green goo.

MIAMI - The days that followed Anna Nicole Smith's death were filled with
public courtroom drama and private whispers about what might have killed
the former Playboy Playmate.

On Monday, authorities were expected to add a dose of reality by
releasing the results of Smith's autopsy weeks after she was found
unresponsive in a hotel in Hollywood, Fla., on Feb. 8.

Unknown additional evidence from the Seminole Police Department delayed
the autopsy's release. The department is investigating the starlet's
death because the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, where she was
staying, is located on tribal land.

Broward County Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper who has said he is
unaware of any criminal investigation has also declined to release the
autopsy until he reviewed the evidence. No serious injuries were revealed
in his initial examination.

Because Smith's death was so sudden and because her 20-year-old son
Daniel died under suspicious circumstances five months earlier,
speculation about possible criminal activity surrounding the deaths has
been intense.

An inquest into Daniel Smith's death is scheduled to start Tuesday.

Perper's initial tests found no evidence, either in Smith's stomach or
her bloodstream, that she had taken large amounts of prescription
medication. The medical examiner said prescription drugs, but no illegal
drugs, were found in Smith's hotel room. He wouldn't identify the drugs.

The initial examination also found signs of inflammation in Smith's
heart. Perper said it was "something which looks a little bit unusual"
but also noted "may be nothing."

Smith arrived at the Hard Rock on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days
later aboard a new yacht that her companion Howard K. Stern was arranging
to buy. She was seldom seen outside her room during her stay: She was
said to be suffering from a stomach flu before she was found dead.

Smith was a Texan who went from topless dancer to Playboy Playmate of the
Year, Guess jeans model and bride of 89-year-old oilman J. Howard
Marshall II. She took her fight for his estimated $500 million fortune as
far as the Supreme Court and the ongoing battle could make her daughter
Dannielynn very wealthy. Stern and two other men have claimed they are
the baby's father.

Chinese Studies - Yoga, anger management taming Naomi Campbell

Yoga, anger management taming Naomi Campbell

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-03-14 16:33

NEW YORK - British supermodel Naomi Campbell says yoga and anger
management classes are helping her to keep a lid on her famously hot
temper, in a newspaper interview.

"It's part of recovery," Campbell told Tuesday's edition of the New York
Daily News of her three months practicing yoga. "I'm trying to stay at a
peaceful place inside."

Campbell, who is to start mopping New York city floors next week as part
of a community service order for throwing a cell phone at her housekeeper
last year, also said in the interview she was ready for the week of
chores.

"I'm from a Caribbean family," Campbell said. "My grandmother raised all
of us. I had to wash my underwear and my socks after school. I had to
clean the table, I had to (vacuum) Hoover."

She said she would auction off the jeans and boots she wears during the
court-ordered mopping duties for charity. "It'll go straight to the
Nelson Mandela Children's Fund," she said.

Campbell said the incident had caused her to do some serious
soul-searching and that her anger management class had been a "great
experience."

"I loved the class," she said. "The teacher talked about prevention...
Like in my case, if someone does something to me, I have to stop and ask
myself, 'Is it worth the bother?' I learned I just have to step away from
the situation."

A reflective Campbell said she could only blame herself for the cell
phone incident. "I have no blame for anyone," Campbell said. "I never
will blame other people. Blame deflects you from looking inside yourself.

"I take full responsibility for what I've done," the 36-year-old said.

Campbell also revealed she wanted to have children, even though she's
currently single. Aspiring suitors don't even need to be wealthy, she
added.

"I don't need a rich guy -- I have money," she said. "I like creative
guys who know what they like doing and focus on their passion."

Pnyin - Picking up where sudoku left off

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Picking up where sudoku left off

(Beijing Today)
Updated: 2007-03-05 15:13

If you're not finished racking your brain for with sudoku puzzles, it may
be time to give the newest puzzle crazy a try: kakuro, sudoku's big
brother. Kakuro is a new craze in the US, Japan and many European
countries. If you're nuts about sudoku, then kakuro may be a dream come
true

If you read any newspapers or magazines with a puzzle section, you'll see
that crosswords and sudok were popular puzzle in China during 2006.
Beijing Today covered sudoku last year.

But this year, a new puzzle is on the rise: kakuro.

Last year, ABC News reported, "The popularity of kakuro now has eclipsed
that of sudku in Japan and the United Kingdom. Now, it's coming back to
the United States.Kakuro seldom appears in Chinese newspapers and
magazines, but brain-teaser fans can't afford to miss out on it.In China,
the first group of kakuro fans developed as an offshoot of sudoku
addicts. I met one kakuro addict among a sudoku group.

Cheng Hao, a college student in Shenzhen, is a sudoku addict and has
played kakuro for almost a month. When he searched for sudoku on the
Internet, he found kakuro incidentally. "I love kakuro even more than
sudoku now," he said, "Kakuro is more a logic puzzle than sudoku, so I am
crazy about it"As far as I know, I'm the only karo player amongst my
friends, so I usually play online," he added

What is kakuro:

At first glance, a kakuro grid looks a little like a crossword grid.
Similar to sudoku, it is all about numbers, but it does require some
mathematical reasoning. The difference between kakuro and sudoku is that,
with a kakuro grid, the numbers indicate the sum total of all the
individual cells in that row or column. Kakuro is a logic game that is
often called the mathematical transliteration of a crossword puzzle.

The word "kakuro" comes from the Japanese kasan kurosu (cross), a
portmanteau of the words for 'addition' and crossword'. It is believed
the word was crby Japanese businessman McKee Kaji.

Kakuro is thought to originate from the 1960s. The first puzzles,
originally translated as "Cross Sums," were published in 1966 by Dell
Magazines, the same American publication whichne decade later introduced
sudoku to the world.

Just like what happened with Sudoku, the market craze and the re-branding
from Cross Sums to Kakuro occurred only after the puzzle was imported to
Japan, improved, and exported back to the West

The numbers given in a Kakuro are like clues. Each is a total to a sum,
and you have to work out which numbers add up to the total to fill the
blank squares. The aim of the game is to fill all the blank squares in
the using only numbers 1 to 9, and that the numbers entered add up to the
corresponding clues. When the grid is filled out, the puzzle is complete.
If you can add small numbers, then you can play kakuro.

'Cancer is the curse of my family': Gwyneth Paltrow

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has taken up a campaign against cancer, in a
drive sponsored by Damiani jewellers.

The disease has plagued the Academy-award winning actress's family for
long, for her dad, aunt, grandmothers and a young cousin died of it.

The 'Shakespeare in Love' star has said that she is confronting the evil
genes by natural means.

"Cancer has been the curse of my family. I am challenging these evil
genes by natural means," The Sun quoted her, as saying.

Paltrow, who is married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin, has said that in
her home, everyone is a vegetarian and only organic soaps and cleaners
are used. The 30-year-old star also makes it a point to protect her
children from eating anything harmful.

"In my home we are all vegetarians and only use organic soap and
cleaners. I want to protect my children from anything harmful in their
food,' she said.

Paltrow has also accepted an offer to promote a perfume, if the maker
donates 255,000 pounds to cancer research.

Free Chinese Lesson - Sports' dress codes

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Sports' dress codes

(lifestyle.com)
Updated: 2007-02-07 11:06

Spring holiday is a time to get away from the city. Having breakfast on
top of a mountain 5,000 feet high, playing cards with friends in a deep
canyon, snuggling under the starry sky with your lover, skiing in the
Alps... these are all possibilities for the spring holiday. However
before setting out on a trip, you should be aware of what clothes and
equipment you need to have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Different outdoor activities require different kinds of clothes and gear.
For example, mountaineers have special jackets and skiers have outfits
made of thick, waterproof material. But for the layman who just wants to
enjoy the outdoors, there are three necessary layers of clothing you
should make sure you have in your suitcase.

Underclothes
It's important not to wear cotton as the clothing that is next to your
skin, as cotton will absorb sweat, but doesn't dry quickly, making you
cold. Try using special materials like Cool Max that absorb sweat but
also dry quickly.

The middle layer
Wool is not the best choice to wear over top of undergarments, as it is
heavy and hard to dry if it gets wet. Manmade fleece works well for the
middle layer because of its high breathability and protection from the
wind.

The outer layer
A good jacket can help block the wind and keep the rain off. Gore Tex
outer wear is light, wind and water proof, and breathes well.

Specific sports dresses

Golf
It's said that golf is a game that helps people mature, and the main
purpose of golf costumes has always been to display perfect delicacy and
elegance. So for those who want to play golf, pro golf clothes are a good
idea.

What to wear:
Long or short sleeve shirts together with 100% cotton or pure wool
trousers have always been the perfect combination for golf's aristocratic
delicacy and elegance, although there are some tight shirts and skirts
for women. Golf shirts normally have a collar, are of one color or have
cross stripes, while jackets and sweaters are a bit darker in color or
have the typical British check patterns.

It may also be a good idea to bring an umbrella and a pair of golfing
gloves,

Location 2: Changqing Golf Shop, Room C54, Building No.11, No.2299, Yanan
Xilu

Skiing
Ski suits are designed especially for resisting snow, retaining warmth,
and protecting the person wearing it. Ski outfits cannot be replaced by
ordinary jackets or sweaters. Ski suits generally have a high collar that
extends to just below the eyes to protect the face, wristbands on the
sleeves to seal the sleeve against snow, double-layered pants, with the
inner layer fastened with a rubber band at the ankles and waist to keep
out the snow and the outer layer made of durable material that protects
the ski boots in case of accidents.

What you need:
What to wear: Ski jackets and pants. Try to buy them in bright colors as
it makes you easier to spot on the hill.

Gloves and hats. Waterproof cotton gloves with bands can protect hands
from the cold and keep the snow out. A hat not only keeps your head warm,
but also keeps your hair from getting in your face as you ski down the
slopes.

Where to get it:
Location: 509, 5F, Zheng Ren Building, Chong Wen Men Wai Street, Chong
Wen District

Dress helps protect pregnant women

(Chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2007-01-29 10:11

As the Year of the Pig is coming near, many pregnant women in Guangzhou
are expecting their baby to be born in the lucky golden pig year. Among
all those maternity and baby goods, a kind of dress supposed to shield
pregnant women from radiation is selling hot.

Sales of such dress are especially good this year in nearly all shopping
malls in Guangzhou. Although the price of such maternity dresses vary
from 300 yuan to 1,000 yuan, there is still a huge demand for them.

Ms. Li, a saleswoman at a maternity dress shop, told this reporter that
most buyers were white collar office workers. As these women often work
in an environment with much radiation, they are the group who can also
afford to buy the clothes.

Currently, most women with child who wear such maternity clothes are
those who work in public institutions and enterprises. They are made in
various forms. Some are made into robes, while others are made into
vests, aprons, or belly clothes.

Nowadays, we are exposed to so much radiation in offices and we need to
take precautionary measures. I have bought three maternity garments that
can protect me from radiation. Although they are by no means cheap, I
feel it is still worth it, said Ms. Gao, a young woman who has been in
a family way for only two months.

Ms. Wu agreed with her point. In order to make sure that her baby would
be born healthy, she said she wouldnt mind spending some money.
Although she wasnt quite sure about the effect of such clothes, at
least they would make her less worried about her child.

So far, China has not issued any authoritative document to acknowledge
the effect of such maternity clothes which are said to be helpful in
guarding against radiation. The state has not publicized any standards
for the production. So it is still unknown whether these clothes are
helpful to those mothers-to-be. The reporter was informed that all such
maternity clothes sold in Guangzhou had been appraised by the Shanghai
Testing Center before they were put on sale.

In a telephone interview, a doctor from the Maternity and Childcare
Hospital of Guangzhou told the reporter that doctors usually would ask
pregnant women to avoid possible radiation sources, such as computers, TV
sets and fridges in their daily life. However, doctors seldom suggest
pregnant women should wear these maternity clothes against radiation. The
doctor hoped that before buying these clothes, young couples should get
more knowledge about the clothes so that they won't cause any harm to the
mothers-to-be.

Norah Jones "terrified" by Jude Law

By Daniel Kilkelly (Digitalspy.co.uk)
Updated: 2007-01-22 09:17

Norah Jones has admitted that she felt "terrified" after finding out that
she would be appearing alongside Hollywood stars in her new movie.

The American singer appears in My Blueberry Nights with Jude Law, Natalie
Portman, Rachel Weisz and David Strathairn, and the 27-year-old's nerves
were obvious on the first day of filming.

"When I heard the list of actors I felt absolutely terrified," she
revealed. "I thought to myself, 'What have you got yourself into?' When I
listened to the playback after my first scene with Jude my voice sounded
like I had been sucking a helium balloon. You could all but hear my knees
knock."

HSK Exam - Food and drink banned on Shenzhen metro

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Food and drink banned on Shenzhen metro

(Shenzhen Daily)
Updated: 2007-01-18 10:22

Passengers who eat or drink on the Shenzhen Metro will be subject to
fines of 200 yuan (US$25.66) according to Shenzhen Metro regulations, the
Southern Metropolitan News reported.

Local residents are questioning the regulation, however, believing it to
be unreasonable and hard to enforce. "I often take some biscuits and soy
bean milk on the subway because I have to catch the train to get to my
office on time," a woman surnamed Liu said.

The rule also triggered debates on the Internet. Some netizens said that
it's usual for passengers to eat snacks or drink water on the train, and
that people need something to drink, especially in hot weather. Others
said it's difficult to accept and the violators may refuse to take the
punishment.

The regulation is outlined in the "Passenger Rules of the Shenzhen Metro"
published on Thursday, which also forbid smoking, spitting, urinating,
dropping used chewing gum, littering and trampling on seats.

"There isn't much personal space on a train carriage, and the smell of
food may make other passengers feel uncomfortable. If a drink spills, it
can cause a mess," said a subway company employee. "Until now, only
smokers were fined, but people eating or drinking were just given an oral
warning." "We will gradually make the rule more detailed and modify it
based on passenger's practical needs," the person added.

Guangzhou and Hong Kong subways issued a similar rule in June 2005 and
April 2006, respectively.

Chinese Pinyin - Shanghai, the most fashionable city in China

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Shanghai, the most fashionable city in China

(cri.com)
Updated: 2006-12-28 11:06

Horizon Research conducted a survey on fashion recently, finding Shanghai
to be the most fashionable city in China.

With unique economic and cultural background as an international
metropolis, Shanghai deserves to be called the most fashionable city in
China.

In the survey, some 50.75% of the responders from Shanghai appreciate
single life as the most fashionable life, and 26.12% are willing to be
weekend couples. The love affiairs of senior citizens are also well
respected, for 32.09% of the responders say they fully understand it.
However, only 41.04% of Shanghainese accept DINK, while the national
figure is 41.63%.

The most fashionable job in Shanghainese's mind is model, which reflects
that Shanghainese appreciate individuality and personal charms, very
similar to New Yorkers.

What is the symbol of fashion? Some 32.84% of the responders tick cars
(lower than the national figure of 46.07%), and another 27.61% tick
jewels (higher than the national figure of 17.98), which might stand for
the consumption of women in Shanghai.

Nearly two weeks after Reese Witherspoon announced her separation from
Ryan Phillippe, the actress has filed for divorce. In Wednesday's filing,
Witherspoon cites "irreconcilable differences" and seeks physical custody
of the couple's two children - 7-year-old Ava and 3-year-old Deacon.

Witherspoon, 30, also seeks visitation for Phillippe, 32, and "exclusive
use of the family residence." Witherspoon also asked for the court to
terminate its ability to award spousal support to Phillippe.

The filing does not list separate or community property, saying the
nature of the assets has yet to be determined.

The couple, who costarred in the 1999 release "Cruel Intentions," married
that year. Their separation was announced Oct. 30 by a publicist who
declined to elaborate on the reason for the split.

Chinese School - Neutral attire becomes popular

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Neutral attire becomes popular

Updated: 2006-11-24 15:05

Models in neutral attire during China Fashion Week
2006

Though the weather in Nanjing is very cold these days, the emergence of
"neutrally dressed"men and women surely has brought some warmth to the
city.

This winter, many women in Nanjing have stowed away their beautiful
skirts and colorful scarves in their wardrobes, and put on suits instead.
They want to show their faith in the equality of men and women by these
clothes. In fact, they don't only dress like men, but also have proved
that they are no inferior to men in every aspect.

Many men in Nanjing put on neutral-style clothes, too. To them, being
"neutral"is of course different from being "sissy". They are very
gentlemen-like and polite. While they are deft-handed when doing
housework, they are no less manly when going in for sports. Their
confidence comes from their excellence.

The pursuit for "neutrality"actually reflects the new tide of equality
between the two sexes, which is an advancement of the society.

Chinese Online Class - Love for Singles Day

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Love for Singles Day

By Yan Zhen and Lu Feiran (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2006-11-09 09:14

A Website employee puts a band on the wrist of a single woman to help her
find Mr Right at an office building in downtown Shanghai yesterday. The
wristband is inscribed with a code that matches another wristband worn by
a single man.
Love is in the air as matchmaking Websites and young singles prepare for
Saturday's Singles Day, which this year will feature a singles party and
an online scheme to get office workers better acquainted.

Matchmaking Website marry5.com will distribute 1,000 wristbands at office
buildings in the city's central business district.

The wristbands, one type for men and another for women, are inscribed
with a code which workers use to register their details online.

Once a person registers he or she can look up the details of the person
with the corresponding code of the opposite sex and decide whether to
seek them out.

"We are expecting white-collar workers to log on to the Website to find
their Mr or Miss Right holding the same code," said Lincole Lam, the
Website's manager.

The Website will also hold a get-together for wristband holders at Luxun
Park in Hongkou District on Saturday.

At many distribution sites yesterday noon, women asking for wristbands
outnumbered men.

"It's a cool idea to try my luck," said Huang Min, 24, a female lawyer,
adding that young men nowadays were too busy to spend time looking for
love.

On Saturday, Love21cn.com, a Beijing-based matchmaking Website, will host
a singles party in M-Factory Bar in Xuhui District.

The event has attracted 2,600 people, even though only the first 800 who
sign up can go.

"It never occurred to us that so many people would love to come," said
Gao Lei, one of the event's organizers.

A 28-year-old woman from western China surnamed Cheng said she was eager
to find a partner at the party because she was ashamed of being single.

"All the friends around me have a boyfriend or husband, I feel lonely
every night I stay at home by myself," she said.

Not everyone who is going to the party is on the hunt for a relationship
- some are going to make friends or collect a few business cards.

"I love to go to these kinds of parties, but I'm not worried about my
marriage at all," said Swee Chen, a fashion company employee who has just
graduated from college. "I find knowing people of all styles is very
interesting, but I never expect to find my Mr Right at these things."

Windy Chen, a psychology consultant, said women were more worried about
marriage than men because they think finding a husband will get harder as
they grow older.

"But the fact is that the more worried they get the harder it will be to
find a suitable partner," said Chen. "And a marriage that is entered into
without a lot of thought could damage a person's future."

Singles Day first started on the Internet, and has recently become
popular with young people across China.
